Beyond your room

Discover Dawaipani & Darjeeling

The hills around Dawaipani are full of things to see, taste, and explore. Here is what we love most — and what we think you will too.

Your base for the hills

Dawaipani sits at a sweet spot — quiet enough to feel like a true escape, but close enough to Darjeeling town that you can dip in whenever you like. From here, you can walk to tea gardens, catch a sunrise over Kanchenjunga, or simply sit on the balcony and watch the clouds move through the valley.

We are happy to help you plan any of the experiences below — or to simply point you in the right direction and let you wander.

Tea Garden Walks
1–2 hoursEasy

Tea Garden Walks

Stroll through lush green tea estates just minutes from the homestay. Watch the pickers at work, learn about the difference between first and second flush, and breathe in the fresh mountain air. We can arrange a guided walk with a local tea estate worker.

Best in the early morning when the light is soft and the gardens are quiet.
Sunrise at Tiger Hill
Half day (early start)Easy

Sunrise at Tiger Hill

Rise before dawn and make the short drive to Tiger Hill to witness the Himalayan peaks — including Kanchenjunga and, on a clear day, Everest — glow gold as the sun rises. One of the most breathtaking sights in all of India. We will pack you a flask of tea for the journey.

October to December and March to April offer the clearest skies.
Darjeeling Toy Train
2–7 hoursEasy

Darjeeling Toy Train

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is one of the great train journeys of the world. Take the short joyride from Darjeeling to Ghum and back, or the full heritage run. The views from the carriages are extraordinary.

Book tickets in advance during peak season (April–June, October–November).
Monastery Visits
Half dayEasy

Monastery Visits

The Darjeeling hills are home to several beautiful Buddhist monasteries, including the famous Ghoom Monastery and the Yiga Choeling. Colourful prayer flags, ancient murals, and a profound sense of peace await. Rajan can take you to the lesser-known ones that most tourists miss.

Dress modestly and remove shoes before entering prayer halls.
Birdwatching
2–3 hoursEasy to moderate

Birdwatching

The forests around Dawaipani are home to an extraordinary variety of birds — from the fire-tailed sunbird to the Himalayan monal. Early morning walks with binoculars are a quiet, meditative joy. We can recommend the best local trails and connect you with a birding guide.

Bring binoculars and wear muted colours. Dawn is the best time.
Local Food & Home Cooking

Local Food & Home Cooking

Every meal at Humro Sano Dawaipani is made from scratch using local ingredients. Didi is happy to show guests how she makes momos, thukpa, and sel roti. We also know the best local dhabas and restaurants in Darjeeling town for when you want to venture out.

Ask Didi the night before if you would like to join her in the kitchen.
